Description

It’s hard to imagine that the tiny ShadowCast 2 is able to magically turn your laptop screen or iPad into an HDMI monitor for all your gaming (and videography) needs. Simply plug this into the HDMI port of your favorite console (it completely hides inside of the Nintendo Switch dock!) and it converts that signal to a USB-C port that you can directly connect to your laptop or iPad and play instantly. No more hauling a TV around for that game convention or dorm room, simply use the screen you always have with you - that shiny MacBook or other portable computing device.

The ShadowCast 2 is compatible with many apps, essentially turning your game console into a ‘webcam’ of sorts. You can play games in popular streaming apps like OBS if you want to share your gameplay to your Twitch and YouTube followers, or you can record your gameplay in apps like Quicktime. We even have a simple app called Genki Arcade (Win/Mac/Chrome) and Genki Studio (iPad) that lets you get you playing as instant as pushing the ‘input’ button on your TV remote.

A sequel to IGN’s “Best Capture Card of 2023” and our most crowdfunded favorite ShadowCast. Ditch the TV and plug this tiny adapter into your console’s HDMI port and you’ve discovered the tiniest, simplest most seamless way to play, record, and stream your console games to your laptop and iPad.

Key Features:

"Best Capture Card of 2023" by IGN.

  • High-Definition Recording: Capable of QHD 1440P30 and 1080P60 capture for high-quality video content.
  • Swift Data Transfer: Features USB-C 3.2 connectivity with a 5Gbps transfer rate for speedy data movement.
  • User-Friendly: Offers Plug and Play functionality, eliminating the need for driver installation.
  • Minimal Delay: Engineered for low latency to ensure smooth video transmission.
  • Software Compatibility: Supports various applications like OBS, Xsplit, Streamlabs, and more for versatile use.
  • Multi-Platform Streaming: Enables content streaming on popular platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, and others.
  • Tablet Integration: Includes Genki Studio compatibility for iPad, enhancing mobile use.
  • Ultra-Light Design: Boasts a feather-light weight of 10 grams for portability.
  • Camera Flexibility: Allows for easy conversion of a camera to a high-quality webcam for streaming or video conferencing.

How to use:

  • To get your console video feed to your computer simply plug ShadowCast 2 into the HDMI port of your console and then plug the included USB-C 3.2 cable into the ShadowCast 2 to your computer’s USB-C 3.0+ port.
  • Important: You need a USB-C 3.2 port to capture 1440p30.
  • Open your favorite app - and all of these will have various different settings - but essentially you will need to select ‘ShadowCast 2’ as the video/camera input source and ‘ShadowCast 2’ as the audio/mic input source. You’ll also usually be able to set the resolution and framerate - we recommend 1080p60 generally as the best balance of smooth fast gameplay and quality.
  • From here you should already be able to play your game with video and sound. If you want to record a video of your game play you should have a record video button in your app or be able to record the full screen from your OS. Many apps like OBS, YouTube, and Twitch Studio will also let you livestream your footage.

The ShadowCast 2 is good overall, just little things that bother me.

My main purpose in buying the Genki ShadowCast 2 was to use the PS4 Slim on Apple computers so that I don't need to buy a monitor.
I tested the Genki ShadowCast 2 on the PS4 Slim with a Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019, iMac and a M1, 2020, MacBook Air.
I played Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection and Fortnite.

The Good:
1. The Genki ShadowCast 2 works well on the M1 Macbook Air, with no noticeable faults.
2. Plug and play, the ShadowCast 2 is relatively easy to set up.
3. I could use chat apps like Discord on my iMac while playing on consoles that don’t have those chatting apps or features.
4. The ShadowCast 2 can record higher-quality 1080p/60fps video compared to the PS4 Slim’s “Video Clip” feature which maxes out at 720p/30fps.
5. The ShadowCast 2 works as a webcam, so you can share footage with friends on meeting apps like Zoom or Discord.

The Bad:
1. The ShadowCast 2 does not directly fit into the PS4 Slim. I had to buy a 0.5m HDMI extender so I could connect it to the PS4 Slim’s HDMI port.
2. Poor video quality when using the ShadowCast 2 on the 2019 4k iMac. Colors, resolution, and input delay are noticeably worse when using the ShadowCast 2 on my 2019 iMac.
3. Genki has removed HDCP support from the ShadowCast 2. You can’t use consoles that have HDCP enabled like the PS3, PSTV, or Xbox360 unless you have an HDMI splitter.
4. The Genki Arcade app from Genki’s website does not work properly. I had to download the app from Apple’s App Store for the ShadowCast 2 to work.

Overall, the ShadowCast 2 does what it says. Like what others say, the ShadowCast 2 is for casual gaming. Although I wished that the ShadowCast 2 would perform better on the 2019 iMac since the 2019 iMac was the device I was looking forward to using the PS4 on, not the M1 MacBook Air. I also did not like how HDCP support was removed, so I would need to buy an HDMI splitter if I wanted to use the ShadowCast 2 with my PS3. However, if you are planning to use the ShadowCast 2 on Apple Silicon devices (like the M1, M2, or M3 Macs) with a console that can switch off HDCP, then you'll encounter no problems like me.
